Lower Back Pain In Early Pregnancy

Pregnancy can be a joyous and exciting time, but it can also be an uncomfortable time. A common complaint of expectant mothers is lower back pain in early pregnancy. This may happen alongside other symptoms such as tender breasts, morning sickness and muscle aches. There are various reasons why so many moms to be experience back discomfort. One reason is the amount of progesterone in the body during the gestational period. Because progesterone softens the ligaments, discs and muscles there may be cramping, soreness and discomfort in the lower back area.
If you experience this type of back pain during pregnancy, see your doctor right away. While things are probably normal, it's never good to take chances. Back pain might also indicate something like a urinary tract infection or other medical issue that needs to be treated. To keep future urinary issues at bay you may be advised to consume cranberry juice on a regular basis. If the problem is normal pregnancy back pain, there are various ways you can deal with the discomfort. The easiest and often most effective remedy is exercise.
Light activity like walking and gentle stretching can help keep the back strong and flexible. Never start an exercise program without consulting your physician first, especially during pregnancy. Your OB-GYN can also educate you about the various types of exercise that are recommended for pregnant women. Yoga and Pilates can be modified for moms-to-be. Water exercises are also thought to be great for pregnant women because the water provides a gentle cushion against strain. You may want to take a prenatal exercise class or purchase a DVD so you can exercise at home. Exercise during pregnancy is good for you in many ways and can benefit not only your back but your whole body as well.
Another way to cope with lower back pain in early pregnancy is to check your sleeping position. Most often, pregnant women are advised to sleep on their left side, with a pillow between legs and the knees slightly bent. This position is usually the most comfortable and even the most healthy for an expecting mother and her baby. If you need more information, speak to your doctor.
