Causes Of Low Back Pain
|
Lumbago is another word for lower back pain, is a common condition. Many people complain about problems with their back, especially the lower portion. There are many things that can cause this condition, but most often the causes of low back pain can be put in one of two categories. First would be a specific disease or disorder. Examples of this would include degenerative disc or herniated disc issues. The second potential cause is muscular and may include strains, sprains or other injuries. In addition to there being two main causes of back pain, there are also two main types.
The first of these is called acute back pain. Acute pain often comes on suddenly, such as following an accident. Sometimes, acute pain will flare up for no discernable reason. Although acute pain can turn into something more serious if left unattended often it goes away in a matter of weeks if not sooner. Chronic pain, on the other hand, lasts much longer. For pain to be classified as chronic it must persist for longer than three months. The pain level one has to deal with may be steady, fluctuating or progressive in nature.
To further understand lower back pain or lumbago, one should strive to understand more about the back itself. There are so many complex anatomical structures that make up the back. For example, there are large nerve roots in the lower back that branch to the arms and legs. There are much smaller nerves around the spine. There are muscles called erector spinae that come into play. In addition there are joints, ligaments and discs to think about as well. Because many of the nerve structures are connected with other parts of the body, you may experience issues in the feet or legs such as numbness or loss of strength.
The correct treatment for lower back pain or lumbago depends upon its cause and what type it is. As you know, there are many causes of low back pain. Your doctor will evaluate your condition and from there may make a diagnosis, refer you for more tests or refer you to a specialist. Once a diagnosis has been made, a treatment plan will be developed. If you are unable to eliminate your back problems completely, there are certainly a variety of ways to reduce your discomfort. Your doctor will advise you on what you should and should not do to treat your back problem.
